The idea of going solar is appealing for many people. It means lower bills, cleaner energy, and a smaller carbon footprint. However—for most—installing panels at home is just not practical. Perhaps you rent, have a shaded roof, or simply don’t want to deal with a third-party solar company.
That’s where Plumas-Sierra REC’s Community Solar Program comes in. In 2019, PSREC built a 2.5-megawatt solar installation at the Sierra Army Depot in Herlong. This facility now offers members an affordable way to enjoy the benefits of solar power without the need for panels on their home or property.
PSREC is pleased to announce that its Community Shared Solar program has been approved by the California Energy Commission. The community solar program gives those who are building new homes the ability to meet the Title 24 building requirements for rooftop solar without having to install it on their rooftop.
The program gives new home builders the opportunity to secure utility-scale solar power from PSREC to meet the requirements of the 2025 California Building Standards Code, which requires all new low-rise residential buildings permitted after May 1, 2026, to be solar-powered.
Locally generated solar power via PSREC’s Community Solar Program is available in blocks of 100 kilowatt-hours. If a member uses more than their allotted solar amount, they are charged at the regular rate. If they use less than their purchased amount of solar, the remainder will be credited toward their next bill. These can be easily bought as blocks for a one-time fee over a fixed period. If you do not wish to buy blocks up front, blocks of 100 kWh are available at an additional monthly fee.
This flexible approach makes it easy to participate in renewable energy without assuming any responsibility for the installation and maintenance of equipment. 1 of the biggest advantages of community solar is that there’s nothing for you, the member, to maintain. There’s no need to worry about zoning restrictions, equipment warranties, or cleaning panels; you simply receive your credits on your bill.
