Beware of Scammers!

Scammers are swindling utility customers across the country.

The scam involves a phone call to a customer by a con artist posing as a co-op or utility employee seeking an immediate payment for service.

By falsifying caller-ID—a technique known as “spoofing”— the scammer’s call appears to be from the utility.

Customers are threatened with having service disconnected unless they buy a pre-paid debit card or use an online payment service to pay their bill at once.

PSREC reminds members to be suspicious of calls asking for payment information. If you receive a suspicious call, please call PSREC to verify the request for payment before providing any personal information. Also, report scammer calls to the Federal Trade Commission. The FTC also provides great information on identifying scammers and how to protect yourself at www.consumer.ftc.gov/scamalerts.
